Stories to Tell: Sarah

Hello, I'm Sarah! I'm a fourth-year student at the University of Toronto, finishing this fall with a major in human biology and minors in statistics and psychology. I enjoy doing things outside, such as running, hiking, picnics, and simply hanging out with friends. I also enjoy learning new songs on the ukulele. So far this summer, my favourite memory has been attending Indycar's Fan Friday for the Toronto Race. As a motorsports fan, I was excited to see the cars and drivers in action!

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

I'm navigating a lot of unknowns at this point in my life, with graduation and everything. But it's easier to go through because I know that God has plans for me. I've been enjoying attending bible study this summer with a group of people outside of my typical UofT bubble. Additionally, one of the main lessons I learned from a mission trip in February was to show love to others. This summer, I'm challenging myself to engage with and learn more about others, even if it ouside of my comfort zone. This way, I have the opportunity to share a portion of God's love with more people.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Missions was something I was always on the fence about. As someone who tends to be more reserved and introverted, the idea of going on mission honestly felt intimidating. But through the encouragement of my leaders and friends at Power to Change, I began to reconsider. Also, being part of the Missions Discipleship Cohort with Missions Hub also helped me understand the value and purpose behind missions. Furthermore, hearing stories from friends—and even friends of friends—who had gone on missions inspired me and sparked a genuine excitement to take that step myself.

Can you share more about the spiritual climate, outreach strategy or ministry overview during your time participating on your missions trip?

This past reading week in the winter semester, I had the privilege of going on a mission trip to Honduras. During my time in Honduras, I had the joy of leading devotionals for pre-K and kindergarten children—teaching them about the fruit of the Spirit and the armour of God using a mix of my limited Spanish and help from translators. It was amazing to see how excited they were to learn and how much they remembered days later. Even without translators, God opened the door for genuine conversations and connection. My team, especially my roommates, were a blessing—we shared deep spiritual conversations and supported one another through prayer and worship.

Visiting families who lacked basic comforts—beds, stoves, healthcare—was humbling. Many were still content and full of faith, reminding me that Christ truly is enough. We distributed clothes, medical supplies, and fluoride treatments, but the greatest gift was encouraging others to keep seeking God.

The hospitality we received was overwhelming—people welcomed us like family, cooked for us in hot kitchens, gave out of their scarcity, and reminded me of the love described in 1 John 4. Their generosity, despite having little, showed me what it really means to live out Christ’s love—and that’s something I hope to carry with me moving forward.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

My biggest piece of advice is to talk to people who’ve been on mission trips—everyone’s experience is different, and there’s so much wisdom to gain from their stories. Also, remember that missions isn’t limited to going overseas; it can also mean serving in your local church, campus, or community. Go in with an open heart and mind—there are so many ways God can use you!
