Stories to Tell: Gwen

Hello! My name is Gwen, and I’ve just finished my fourth year at U of T studying math and statistics. I grew up in Boston (not the Ontario one) and moved to Toronto a few years ago for university. Based on these facts, people love to ask me one of “Why U of T?” or “Why math?”. Well, you can find the answer to the first question somewhere in this post, but I’ll leave the second one to your imagination for now.

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

Living with missions in mind plays a part in the way I plan for things like the work I do and where I live. While I’m practicing attentiveness to God’s leading on such bigger opportunities to live strategically for the global task, on a smaller scale, my mind and heart are continually refocused through the constant flow of opportunities to learn, mobilize, send, and welcome where I find myself now. At my local church and Missions Hub, I love to attend talks by missionaries who are visiting from the homes they’ve made among unreached people groups. How many stories they bring about the undeniable power of God in the world! I often learn through books on missions or resources provided by sending agencies. What does it take to send those who have decided to go where no one else has gone? I’m also looking out for ways to build up the conversation about missions among Christians. One thing I have experienced since learning about the importance of God’s global glory in Scripture is the desire to share with others about God’s love for all peoples and the needs in places where there is no access to the gospel. I hope to keep engaging friends in meaningful conversations where we would leave mutually encouraged towards joyful ownership of the Great Commission. And a special opportunity I have this summer is working on the Missions Disciplers curriculum with Missions Hub for the upcoming year, in hopes that participants would come away with more clarity about their part in the global story.

All this to say, I’ve learned how living with missions at the forefront is something that calls for a lifestyle of small, intentional steps of learning and adjusting—something I’m challenged to be diligent with in this period of my life. As I continue to engage in the mentioned ways, I’m excited for what the future holds, knowing that I have a lifelong part to play in the promises God has made (Rev. 7:9-10).

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

I first started caring about global missions in high school, when I had the chance to participate in an eye-opening learning experience with the mobilization group, Engage Global. By God’s grace, the spark is still alive as I write this paragraph six years later. Missions has been an influential factor in the way I pursue different opportunities in my life—the biggest one so far probably being coming to U of T to study in a global city. Life in Toronto has given me the opportunity to meet people from all over the world with different cultural and religious backgrounds, whether we take classes together, play sports together, or have even lived together as housemates. Many have recently immigrated from places where they could not access the gospel if they wanted to, and somehow we’ve been placed in the same city to live as neighbors. My experience in this diverse city has shown me how the world is both bigger and closer than I had truly grasped before. Now, there are places I want to go and people I want to meet to see the ways God is active in this world.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally? Any specific resources, tools, or communities to connect with?

I’d love to encourage anyone open to engaging more to take advantage of missionary testimony sharings, whether your church hosts workers periodically or you’re connected to organizations like Missions Hub that make space for these stories. An important step is also digging into the “biblical basis for missions”—you can try Googling it, or ask a friend who’s familiar! It’s a thread of stories throughout Scripture where we consistently see that God’s glory is meant to be shared among all peoples. I’ve also been deeply encouraged through more formal experiences, like missions conferences. I had a great experience at CROSS CON, where I experienced rich teaching, was inspired by fellow attendees intentionally discerning their places in global missions, and was practically able to connect with mobilization/sending organizations to continue in my learning afterwards. The list of ways to engage is long, but all it takes is picking one place to begin. And who knows—even that first step could change your life!

Stories to Tell: Nathan

Hi, my name is Nathan. I am an incoming fourth-year student at UofT, and I am originally from Edmonton, Alberta. This summer, I had the amazing privilege to partake in several missions ranging from local to international. Although I have countless amazing memories from throughout the summer, a highlight for me was praying with/for a client before she took the stand during an incredibly distressing divorce and child abuse case. By the grace of God, she was able to testify powerfully and articulately, and we were victorious in the case, securing justice and protection for this mother and her daughter.

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

Earnestly following Jesus has been the crux of all that I did/got to do this summer. I think of this summer as an assortment of different forms of ministry in preparation for what He has in store for my future. From sports ministry to international ministry, to legal ministry, street ministry, and camp ministry as well, this summer has been an incredible opportunity to gain exposure to the many ways of serving the kingdom and discerning how I can continue to live missionally in the future. From the get-go, it was clear that the realization of these opportunities would not come from my own strength or determination; rather, the Lord hardened each step along the way and continually confirmed that His ways are higher than my own. Now, entering the school year, I am excited to take all that I have learned and carry it into the next season of my life, especially as the leader of a campus fellowship.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Missions is incredibly important to me because I see it as a fundamental duty, as someone who has been transformed by the radical love of Jesus, to share that with all I can—especially those who don’t often have access to the Gospel. Throughout my summer, God has encouraged me in many ways, performing many signs and wonders and abundantly providing for everything I could need. I felt truly blessed to be able to live in Matthew 6 fashion. I was also challenged in many ways that I learned from, such as realizing that ministering in a closed country is especially difficult for me, and that unlike some others, I may not feel the same deep conviction for a specific people group.

Can you share more about the spiritual climate, outreach strategy or ministry overview during your time participating on your missions trip?

My summer consisted of two main "trips." The first was a two-week trip to South Asia with Athletes in Action (AIA), ministering to a small Muslim-majority island nation. Through basketball and volleyball, our goal was to develop intentional relationships, especially with the youth of this country, in hopes of generational change that would allow for more religious freedom in the future. During our time there, we put in great effort to show that these young ones are loved and seen—something that is very lacking in this country, especially for girls. We were also able to come alongside and provide relief for a long-term missionary there, as well as encourage the very few believers present.

The second portion of my summer was spent serving in Hawaii. As a legal intern at a small Christian law firm for the months of June and July, I had the incredible privilege of uplifting and ministering to those most in need, both in court and in client meetings. Through my local church and other community partners, I was able to volunteer in a variety of ways, supporting the local people who are overwhelmingly low-income, in a neighborhood dominated by drugs, crime, and many forms of wickedness. The focus here is to meet people’s primary needs by providing food, clothing, and shelter, while also slowly working with them to overcome generational bondage. I also had the privilege of helping run a VBS program for the local kids through the church and supporting the youth ministry by establishing deep relationships with the youth.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally? Any specific resources, tools, or communities to connect with?

If you feel that the Lord is impressing on your heart a desire to get involved in missions, I would strongly encourage you to lean into that. The sad reality is that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few. Missions Hub is an excellent resource to find great ways to get involved; as for me, both my trips were self-initiated. There are so many opportunities out there that will align with your giftings and calling if you are willing to explore. My experience in Hawaii began as a personal project for an academic scholarship and ended up becoming the most fulfilling ministry I have ever done, once I got there and vocalized my intent to serve. Missions certainly do not have to be international either—there are many great ways to step out of your comfort zone and do important kingdom work within your local community. Take the initiative to step out in faith, and God will straighten your path, give you clarity, and provide for each step along the way.

Any other specific stories you'd like to share?

Another cool story that I forgot to share is that during our time in South Asia, we were discovered by the U.S. ambassador to that nation. He and his wife are believers but have been severely isolated over the last four years they’ve spent there. They invited us into their home, and we were able to provide much-needed fellowship and greatly encourage them. It turns out that the ambassador had previously been a student-athlete with AIA in California! Hearing his testimony of how God elevated him was super encouraging and gave me lots of hope for the future of this country with godly leaders like him.

Shaping My Future: God’s Work Through a Short-Term Trip

Growing up, I always thought I knew exactly how my life would look after high school. I would save up enough money to go to university, study English literature, and get a job in the publishing industry to eventually become an editor. Taking a gap year was never a part of the plan, until I realized that I needed a break from school and I had started to reconsider the pathway I always had planned. It no longer seemed ‘realistic’ and I felt lost as to where God wanted me to go.

Taking that year to work and reflect on my plans, God led me to take a year to study at Heritage Bible College for a year certificate. It was a year full of unexpected friendships, adventures, lessons, and opportunities. It’s where I learned about the short-term vision trip to Gdansk, Poland happening in April-May 2025. As someone who rarely travels, I was nervous to even consider the idea of applying for the team. Even after I had applied and joined the team, I had serious doubts in myself. I had to surrender so many fears to God and trust in him.

After many team meetings of preparation and getting to know each other, our small group of seven was boarding our flight to Gdansk, Poland at the end of April 2025. Though I thought I was ready, I don’t think anything could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. God made my world explode in the most precious and beautiful way. In a way, I got to see God’s creation in a whole new light. Not only the nature around us, but the people, the architecture, the communities, the music, the food, the art, and the history.

There were many memorable aspects about this trip and lessons that I will forever carry close to my heart. As I’ve had time to reflect on this trip, however, there is one aspect that is most prominent for me: learning about Poland and its people. Every single day we heard stories of people, both from the past and in the present, and I was eager to hear them. God is working in so many intricate ways that we could never comprehend. I met people who had lived in Gdansk their whole lives and were a part of so much history. I met people who were new to the city and learning about Poland for the first time. I met people who had such heartache in their life, yet I still saw their joy for the Lord so clearly. I met missionaries who God brought from America and Ukraine. I met Polish citizens trying to learn English. I met youth with a heart for reaching their city with the Gospel. These are the parts I remember the most.

As said before, my plans for life after high school had been put on hold. Before I left for this trip, the college programs I had applied for were being cancelled. With not many options left, I decided to apply to Canadian universities even though I had given up on that dream. God opened that door though and I was accepted to an English Literature Co-Op program. Even after accepting the offer, I had doubts that this was the plan God had for me. It had always been my dream, sure, but it never ended up being my plan when it came to enacting it. Then, I went to Poland. And God overflowed my heart with these stories and their importance. This is where I started to realize that God can still use my dreams to glorify his name. I am not sure how that looks exactly, but he brought me to Poland where he cleared many of my doubts. Reflecting on this vision trip, I can see the many ways in which God is at work in Poland and he used that to stir me towards a future I had given up on: helping people share their stories.

Stories to Tell: Peter

What is a favourite memory from your summer?

My favourite memory from my summer so far is seeing three members of my small group getting baptized. It was such an encouragement seeing how God is working in them and helping them grow in Him this past year.

I am also encouraged to see that God is using me and the gifts He gave me for His kingdom.

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

In this season of my life, I am seeking to spend more time praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ who live in countries where they are facing persecution. I am also seeking to get to know my neighbours. For example, joining a local running club, and also starting some small talk with people living next door.

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

The Word of God has always encouraged and challenged me. James 1:22 is a good example: "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." This verse challenged me not only to grow in knowledge, but also to deepen my love for Christ and enhance my ability to serve others at church and in the community.

Hebrews 12:3 is a great encouragement: "Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted." When I feel I am growing weary in my journey to participate in God's mission, fixing my eyes on Jesus helps me to run with endurance the race that is set before us.

What opportunities did you have this summer to serve God?

I started a book club this summer, reading Tim Keller's "The Reason for God." Initially, this was an idea for my small group - I thought reading good Christian books could help us learn more about God and deepen our relationship with Him. I also thought it was a good idea to learn more about apologetics, the defence of the faith, not just to prepare ourselves to answer big questions from non-believers, but also to help us know God more. Some people in my small group thought it was a great idea and that we could invite other young adults at Knox. So we announced this during our weekly young adult gathering, and a couple of young adults joined us. As a result, Knox Young Adults hosted our first-ever book club.

What are you hopeful for moving forward?

Many young adults at Knox have the hunger to learn more about God. Moving forward, I am hopeful that our young adults at Knox will continue to grow in grace and become more like Christ, and love our neighbours.

Stories to Tell: Emily

Hey everyone! I just graduated from UofT with a Bachelor of Commerce specializing in Management with focuses in Finance and Strategy/Innovation. These four years of undergrad were so impactful and I will miss my community and experiences in Toronto dearly!

What is a favourite memory from your summer?

A favourite memory from summer has GOT to be participating in a mission trip to Vietnam with Power to Change. I've felt a desire to go on a mission trip since attending P2C's fall retreat in my third year, and felt so grateful that God opened the door for me to go this summer after a waiting season. My team and I had the privilege of being the 'pioneering' team in the coastal city we went to, so it was a very unique experience breaking the 'grounds' and setting down roots for future short-and-long-term ministry workers. It required us to take each day as it came, not holding onto our own plans too tightly, and relying wholeheartedly on the Lord to direct our steps. I felt so refreshed and inspired by my team members' hearts for the Lord and genuine desire to live their lives for Him! And I was extremely moved by the local Christians and their lives that exemplified counting the cost to follow Christ and serve their neighbours. I came back from this trip with a greater desire to go all in for the Lord, deeper awareness of the depth of God's love, and a newfound joy in all that Jesus is for me!

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

In my third year, through the people I met and various events I attended, I was exposed to the concept of redemptive entrepreneurship and business as mission. I was SO encouraged by stories of people actively seeking to make much of Christ in their entrepreneurial and financial endeavours. My view of living missionally was greatly expanded. While I always knew that, as Christians, we were called to glorify God in our work, these interactions helped me see the practical, day-to-day ways that it was being done. It was now clear, more than ever, how one can both excel in their business while doing it in a way that puts Christ at the centre of it all and invites others to encounter Him. I spent the rest of undergrad continuing to explore what these concepts looked like in different contexts, meeting some incredibly inspiring folks along the way! Shoutout to the 'Lived Called' event organized by Missions Hub, which you should totally check out whenever it happens again ;)

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally? Any specific resources, tools, or communities to connect with?

Participating in a missions discipleship group, as well as being involved in a missionally-minded student group (P2C) and church for the past few years, were all extremely meaningful in shaping my understanding of what it practically looks like to live missionally. As I step into a new season of grad school, I feel equipped to live my life in a way that invites others' to want to know Christ. I am absolutely going to continue exploring business as mission, and am praying for opportunities to continue meeting people in this space. I came back from Vietnam with a newfound interest in aquatic systems and their relationship with coastal populations. I feel so excited to take advantage of the resources and opportunities available to me in grad school to explore topics I am deeply curious about, and how the Lord may want to use me in the future. I also want to more intentionally engage with my classmates and peers, making space to get to know them deeply. At the end of the day, I hope to continue living with a heart posture of childlike faith and curiosity, being open to whatever the Lord allows to come my way :)

Stories to Tell: Ryand

This past year I graduated from UofT with a double major in Health & Disease and Cell & Molecular Biology! I was blessed to have the chance to serve at Power to Change - UTSG since my 2nd year alongside faithful brothers and sisters in Christ. I will be returning to UofT this coming school year to serve as one of the new Campus Staff Interns for P2C! My favourite memory from my summer so far has been helping lead Summer Discipleship Groups (DG) for our community. Summer DG's have been a great way for those who are still living locally in the summer to still engage with the community and grow and encourage each other in our walk with God. It has been a blessing to see familiar faces and meet new friends, a joy it is to see how the Lord works in people's lives.

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

As I am entering the school year as a Campus Staff Intern, one of my responsibilities this summer is to meet with different people in my life to join in partnership with my ministry through support raising! It has been a joy, day after day, to meet with many friends and loved ones to share about God's calling in my life to engage in campus ministry. I am full of joy knowing that I get to be used by God, and be invited to be a part of His mission to help students take their next steps with Jesus and proclaim the Gospel with boldness and confidence for the furtherance of His Kingdom!

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Engaging in missions is important to me as it is a command from Jesus in Matthew 28:18-20, that is, the Great Commission. A passage of truth that led me to see the importance of engaging with students through campus ministry was Matthew 9:37, "Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;"". Missions has always been in my thoughts and prayers that if the Lord wills, that He can send me somewhere to proclaim Him. I then realized that the place that He has sent me to proclaim Him, is UofT. Seeing so many students that do not know Jesus, developed a deep compassion and excitement in me, to be used by God to share Him. In my time with P2C, we have engaged in many outreaches to the UofT community and it was there that I saw many students were curious to learn and hear more about Christianity and the perspectives that Christians have on certain topics.

What opportunities did you have this summer to serve God?

I and among other leaders decided to lead Summer DG for this year after many students have shown interest in joining and participating. During my time of preparing and serving the students, the spiritual climate was amazing, I was deeply encouraged that in the midst of the summer where many people tend to go away and become busy in other things, that there were students that dedicated their Fridays on a weekly basis to gather in community and grow in their love and knowledge of Jesus, to become faithful disciples and witnesses. Our program this summer is primarily composed of Bible studies and fun social activities, we engaged in a couple of series that we believed would help our growth and our witness to the world. We started with a "Gospel series", reminding ourselves of the Good News of Jesus so that we are clear in sharing the truth to the rest of our community. As of writing this, we are currently going through a series called "Surmounting Struggles". The goal with this series is to go through common struggles that Christians face in their lives so that we can be found faithful to God and seeking His guidance and help. That through these struggles, we hope that it is a way for the Spirit to work in us, to bear more fruit, and impact the lives of the people around us and have our lives be a living testimony that would draw people closer to Jesus.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

I would encourage someone to prayerfully discern and seek God's will in being involved and engaging in missions. It requires you to fully surrender your doubts, fears, worries, etc to God, so that by His Spirit, you can be filled with His love, confidence, boldness, joy to serve Him and to serve others. The Bible has helped me personally to discern my involvement to live missionally on campus, it was my love for God and obedience to His Word that I saw the importance of campus ministry. Seek out faithful brothers and sisters, your pastors, spiritual mentors, communities, etc who have engaged in missions, seek for their wisdom and guidance on how God had called them to missions. It was the calling testimonies of many that encouraged me to pray to God for these opportunities and alongside being obedient to God's Word that helped me take my next step into ministry work for this next season of my life.

Any other specific stories you would like to share?

Through the process of support raising, I was brought into contact with a local church where I was blessed to be used by God as His mouthpiece to deliver a sermon/message for their congregation about the message of the Gospel (Romans 10:5-17) and how we as believers have been sent by God to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to the corners of the Earth!

I am a part of a choral ministry and we had a fundraising musical concert this past July which is for a university back home in the Philippines to support students in their education. The musicale was based on a true story of martyred missionaries who visited the Philippines during World War 2 and showed their unwavering faith in the Lord amidst conflict. The songs covered the themes of the Gospels, faith, missions, etc and by God's grace people were encouraged in their own ways to start living missionally for Him.

Stories to Tell: Sarah

Hello, I'm Sarah! I'm a fourth-year student at the University of Toronto, finishing this fall with a major in human biology and minors in statistics and psychology. I enjoy doing things outside, such as running, hiking, picnics, and simply hanging out with friends. I also enjoy learning new songs on the ukulele. So far this summer, my favourite memory has been attending Indycar's Fan Friday for the Toronto Race. As a motorsports fan, I was excited to see the cars and drivers in action!

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

I'm navigating a lot of unknowns at this point in my life, with graduation and everything. But it's easier to go through because I know that God has plans for me. I've been enjoying attending bible study this summer with a group of people outside of my typical UofT bubble. Additionally, one of the main lessons I learned from a mission trip in February was to show love to others. This summer, I'm challenging myself to engage with and learn more about others, even if it ouside of my comfort zone. This way, I have the opportunity to share a portion of God's love with more people.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Missions was something I was always on the fence about. As someone who tends to be more reserved and introverted, the idea of going on mission honestly felt intimidating. But through the encouragement of my leaders and friends at Power to Change, I began to reconsider. Also, being part of the Missions Discipleship Cohort with Missions Hub also helped me understand the value and purpose behind missions. Furthermore, hearing stories from friends—and even friends of friends—who had gone on missions inspired me and sparked a genuine excitement to take that step myself.

Can you share more about the spiritual climate, outreach strategy or ministry overview during your time participating on your missions trip?

This past reading week in the winter semester, I had the privilege of going on a mission trip to Honduras. During my time in Honduras, I had the joy of leading devotionals for pre-K and kindergarten children—teaching them about the fruit of the Spirit and the armour of God using a mix of my limited Spanish and help from translators. It was amazing to see how excited they were to learn and how much they remembered days later. Even without translators, God opened the door for genuine conversations and connection. My team, especially my roommates, were a blessing—we shared deep spiritual conversations and supported one another through prayer and worship.

Visiting families who lacked basic comforts—beds, stoves, healthcare—was humbling. Many were still content and full of faith, reminding me that Christ truly is enough. We distributed clothes, medical supplies, and fluoride treatments, but the greatest gift was encouraging others to keep seeking God.

The hospitality we received was overwhelming—people welcomed us like family, cooked for us in hot kitchens, gave out of their scarcity, and reminded me of the love described in 1 John 4. Their generosity, despite having little, showed me what it really means to live out Christ’s love—and that’s something I hope to carry with me moving forward.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

My biggest piece of advice is to talk to people who’ve been on mission trips—everyone’s experience is different, and there’s so much wisdom to gain from their stories. Also, remember that missions isn’t limited to going overseas; it can also mean serving in your local church, campus, or community. Go in with an open heart and mind—there are so many ways God can use you!

Stories to Tell: Emmanuel

Tell us a bit about yourself and a favourite memory from your summer so far:

I love fruits! I frequent cheap markets and get the yummiest tropical treasure to share with everyone. Some favourite memories would definitely be composting around our very own mango and guava trees. I'm sure going to miss this when I am back in Canada (unless the Cantaloupes are going for 2 CAD at NoFrills, watch me bring around my trolley, knife and chopping board).

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

While I am back in Singapore, I want to spend more time with my extended family, especially granddad. Right before I was about to commence my first year of University, my grandmum passed away, so I see this opportunity to be with granddad as quite precious. We are blessed to have in our employ a Christian caregiver from Myanmar (a refugee migrant worker) to look after granddad, but I would go visit as often as I can. While my granddad may have spent most of his life as a non church-goer, I see how valuable it is to have a caring family that comes together, bringing church to his home, whether singing worship songs or reading the Bible together. My missions focus currently is to see granddad through, however long I can journey with him.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Back in the 1950s, my paternal grandmother's parents were called to mission work among the Hakka-speaking Chinese immigrant minority on the island of Mauritius. They lived a life of great self-sacrifice and faithfulness to God's direction for her life, in the face of huge trials (I translated a biography of great-grandma, I would gladly send it to you!)

In recent times, I've had the privilege to go with my family to the South Pacific Islands, participating in ministry among the Chinese churches, and at the U of T, I have been very encouraged to see many friends passionate for mission trips and coming back with a new fire. I find that this year, God is setting before me a vision for the future, one with challenges but lots of rejoicing!

Can you share more about the spiritual climate, outreach strategy or ministry overview during your time participating on your missions trip?

P2C's New Summer Mission Trip to: Nuremberg, Germany: A Mandarin-speaking P2C team of 10 students and 4 staff did a short exploratory 3-week trip in May to see the needs of and reach out to Chinese internationals at a local university. We would visit canteens, school parks and even the Chinese grocer's to find students and invite them to chill events at church, bonding through food, games and music. Having experienced for ourselves the joy of the Gospel message and how refreshing Christian community is, we were glad to see many meaningful connections forged, and Christian students galvanized to work together reaching out to new friends.

2nd Family Trip to Nouméa, New Caledonia: With the 6 siblings back together again, my family (bringing along 2 of my sister's friends from Uni) went on a 3-week trip in June (we were last here in Dec 2024), staying at the Chinese church to organize children's programmes, including a Vacation Bible Camp during the school holidays. Out of the ~12 children we were looking after, we were pleasantly surprised to see 3 young boys respond to God's Word positively, as they mostly came from a family background that is not open to Christianity. We also encouraged the church elders (some faithfully serving for 30+ years) to recommence Sunday School classes, and visit elderly church members.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally? Any specific resources, tools, or communities to connect with?

I would highly recommend finding friends around you at school who are serious in evangelism, and setting aside (your very precious) time to pray with these people. For example, get together a group prayer meeting over lunch at your dining hall, or a 9.30pm call bedtime routine.

And of course... I'm enormously excited for Relevant Series 2025 in January!!! Looking forward to joining hands with many Christians at U of T reaping a harvest in our mission field right here on campus.

Missions Hub takes in a cohort of Missions Disciplers every year! I would highly recommend this warm fellowship time, it helped me reflect on the communities and churches I am part of, and their missional outlook.

Stories to Tell: Danielle

Hello, my name is Danielle! I recently graduate from UofT where I served in campus ministry with Power to Change. My life as a student has always been a bit all over the place, but in this past year I found that God provided such a valuable opportunity to slow down to pause and to notice where he was working in my last year of university. Growing valuable trust in God through seasons of suffering and amidst the unknown of what lies beyond graduation has been a part of my learning and healing over the summer. Ultimately, some of the moments that have brought me joy over this summer has been reuniting with my mission trip staff team, and sharing meals at home observing the restoration of my family.

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

In this season of post-grad life, I easily have hours available between my job searching, time with the Lord, and time spent with loved ones. Intentionality with living missionally to cultivate my relationships with other people has been vital as I continue engage in relational evangelism and discipleship. With my time, I have been able to steward the facilitation of the P2C women's sexual integrity accountability group, while also outreaching to my non-Christian friends to share about how Jesus is the only one who can meet their needs. I have found that sharing my testimony of encountering God in the midst of suffering and uncomfortability has spoken significantly to those around me, and I believe that God is allowing me to steward my story to encourage others to see where God is present and patient in the midst of uncertainty.

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

Following graduation, I have been uniquely challenged by uncertainty within my next career steps, often wondering where God will provide for me in this new season. Feelings of inadequacy often bubble up as I reflect on my prior ambitions to become a teacher, however, I have received much confirmation that my calling lies beyond a classroom.

Even after 6 failed interviews, and what is now likely to be over 70 job applications, God has still been tremendously faithful in how he has guided me to narrow down potential pathways in non-for profit and ministry work. As I journey with many people facing similar hardship and questions, I have been able to vulnerably proclaim my trust in Jesus and how that leaves me with hope. From these conversations, I have been able to have intentional dialogue to share the gospel with a number of my peers - who are now in positions to more seriously consider God in their helplessness.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

Before engaging in mission, I think that it is important to understand that today's spiritual climate is often marked by instability and hopelessness as more and more people recognize world's need of restoration, it is important then that the gospel becomes our foundation and right perspective as we witness to God's transformative power and unceasing love. That means having a sense of urgency to recognize our sin, live in conviction that Jesus as the Lord of our lives, and love our neighbours being bold to share the good news with gentleness and truth.

Living missionally, does not always look like being sent to a particular unreached place, but it can practically also look like being faithful where you are. Sharing the gospel does not always look like sharing a presentation or booklet, but can look like a quick coffee chat, a text sharing scripture and a word of encouragement, or even stewarding the presence of Jesus to someone in need. I truly recommend connecting to a fellowship and Christ centered church community that has the biblical foundations to form disciples as they will be able to support your missional living on daily basis!

If you take a peek at my prayer wall which I stuck up for the entire year - a repeat prayer was related to 5 Bible that I wanted to give out at my residence where I worked as a Residence Don. By the end of term all 5 Bibles found people, one very specially gifted to one of my own students who accepted Jesus after I shared the gospel with him. Today, he is one of the only people in his family who is a follower of Jesus, and he desires to continue to share the good news with them over his summer. God is soo good, and our prayers for revival on campus are continuing to be answered!!!

Stories to Tell: Simon

Hi everyone! My name is Simon and I am a dude who wants to follow Jesus in everything I do. I also just graduated from UofT engineering. One of my favourite memories this summer was travelling to Asia with my roomie as a grad trip. I loved trying Vietnamese food, making friends with some local students there, and going on hikes to see the stunning nature!

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

My decision to follow Jesus impacted my summer plans a lot! While I was in Asia, I really wanted to learn about the spiritual landscape over there. I'm super thankful that I made some great friends in Vietnam who were so open to sharing what they believe in, and I'm thankful for how they were willing to listen as I shared about my belief in Jesus! I am so glad we got to learn from each other.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Engaging in missions is really important to me because I genuinely believe that a relationship with Jesus is the most transformational thing that can happen in a persons life. In my own life, my relationship with Jesus has completely uprooted my fruitless pursuit of happiness in things like relationships and video games, and given me a solid and consistent source of joy in my life. I've also seen the courses of others' lives changed for the better in such powerful ways. They are so full of joy and excitement and love after meeting Jesus. I am eager to share about Jesus with everyone because I want everyone to experience this change in their lives, as well as to have eternal life with God!

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

I would encourage them by saying its actually super easy to start living missionally. It doesn't require you to change your degree, profession, study routine, or go on a missions trip (although it might impact those things). Living missionally starts with understanding who you are- you are someone who knows God and can help others know Him in every space you inhabit. In your friendships, you can freely talk about how God is helping you cope with stress or fear of the future. In your study routine, you can pray for God's help in staying focused and studying to honor Him. Maybe your buddies will ask you what you are doing, and boom another easy way to share about the amazing relationship you have with Him! There are literally a million ways to live missionally in everyday life. If these things sound scary, awkward or intimidating, you're not alone! I felt (and sometimes still feel) the same way. Feel free to DM me, or talk to a leader at your campus fellowship, or connect with the missions hub, and we would love to talk more.

Stories to Tell: Elsa

Hello! My name is Elsa and I’m currently going into my 4th year studying Neuroscience and Physiology at UofT. I started getting more involved with P2C going into 3rd year, and God has truly answered my prayers for placing me in a Christian community, while also giving me so many new friendships this year! I remember joining Summer DG exactly one year ago, so having the opportunity to serve as a leader has been one of my favourite memories so far!

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

I think this past year, my views on evangelism have definitely shifted. I knew about the Great Commission and that evangelism is something that Christians do sometimes, but I had my own doubts and fears: “maybe I’m not the one to bring the Gospel to someone, maybe this was a job for another wiser, older, and braver Christian”. But by God’s grace I was able to see just how much—and how many—people on the receiving end need to hear the Gospel.

I had to really evaluate myself, “do I think that telling people about Jesus validates me as a ‘good’ Christian, or do I tell people out of compassion because I know they need Him badly?” This radically changed my perspective. There is an urgency to share the Good News because people all over the world are searching for truth and need to know that, through Jesus, their sins are forgiven. Through this, the Lord changed my attitude toward evangelism from a “how can I?” to a “how could I not?”

Tell us more about your journey preparing to serve this summer:

During the planning stages before launching Summer DG, the other leaders and I had many meetings to pray for the people that would come and to discuss what topics to cover each week. Going into it, I experienced a bit of imposter syndrome because I’ve never actually lead a Bible study before and was worried I might get things wrong. But I kept turning back to 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 and 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 to remind myself that my confidence does not reside in my abilities; rather, my boast is in the Lord, whose power is made perfect in weakness.

Now that we are more than halfway through the summer, it has been such a blessing to witness what God has done through our Bible studies, discussions, and socials. People have been sharing convictions, encouraging one another, and praying together to take practical steps in growing closer to Jesus. I’ve also been deeply inspired by the other leaders who have worked tirelessly and made a commitment to serve each week!

Stories to Tell: Storm

Hi everyone! I’m Storm and I’m a recent graduate from UofT where I studied neuroscience! I came to Christ the end of my third year at UofT. Since then, fellowship was been key to my growth in faith! My favourite memory of the summer was the end of summer session potluck with Grace Toronto’s Young Adults!

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

It has given me a lot of peace! Despite the uncertainty of trying to get jobs or get into grad school, I know he has a plan for me - the anxiety has been defeated by his promise!

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

Missions are so important to me because it is how we can help others experience the love and grace of God, that we have been blessed with. If people didn’t live missionally in the city, I don’t know where I would be - probably living in the sin of the world. But God has used them to speak to me and help me get to know him. So I know the importance of doing the same!

What opportunities did you have this summer to serve God?

I was given the opportunity to be one of the leaders at Grace Young Adults! It was a community of believers firm in their faith, but an environment where it was encouraging and comfortable for new believers. I think I saw the capabilities of using social media to spread word around, but also the importance of simple welcoming conversation. We are called to love our neighbours as ourselves, which means genuinely caring for them even if it is the first time you are meeting. From this sprouted many returning faces for bible study, sharing if meals, prayer and worship!

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally?

I would suggest getting connected with and serving with their home church! It’s always a great starting space. In my experience, it is where a lot of the support and opportunity comes from!

Any specific stories of where you saw God at work this summer?

The power of prayer is amazing! I went to the fireworks for Canada Day at waterfront. I was with a dear friend and we just decided it was a great time to pray, even though we were sitting down surrounded by people. We just simply felt like it was right to do so. After we finished praying, a young man told us it was beautiful and was emotional. We got to talking just about the brokenness in his life. We got to pray for him and wish him well. God will use everything and anything for his will and kingdom, and we are so blessed that he uses us to experience his grace and show the light to others.

Stories to Tell: Jueun

Hi! I’m Jueun from Korea. I’ve been living in Toronto for about two years now, and currently, I serve with Zoe Toronto, a church-planting ministry focused on raising disciples of Jesus in downtown Toronto.

What is a favourite memory from your summer so far?

This summer has been a beautiful season of connection meeting new people through ministry, enjoying the (hot but refreshing!) weather, biking, and even playing some pickleball!

One of the most meaningful highlights has been serving at Greenhouse, a summer discipleship program for students and young adults. It’s been a joy to witness young people dedicating their summer to grow deeper in discipleship, discovering who God is and who they are through Scripture and their daily lives.

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

I see Toronto as my mission field, especially for reaching international students. As a staff member at Zoe Toronto and a part of the Bridges Global Community microchurch, I consider myself a missionary in this city full of diverse cultures and stories.

I’ve been intentionally building friendships with international students learning to understand their lives and how to love and serve them more deeply. At the same time, I’m growing in how to disciple others who are in different life stages and spiritual journeys.

It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been a joyful and stretching process of learning how to be a disciple and discipler following Jesus’ way of humility, sacrifice, and love. Every moment is a chance to reflect His heart to individuals and to our community.

How have you been encouraged or challenged in your journey to participate in God’s mission?

One thing I continue to learn is that everything I do is by God’s grace. There’s no mission I can carry on my own. God invites me to join His work, alongside His people.

That reminder gives me so much encouragement and peace. No matter where I am, if God is present, it can become peaceful ground.

I tend to be rushed and ambitious, often hoping for quick results. But this journey has taught me to be patient, to rely on God’s strength, to listen, and to trust God’s timing. Learning to let go of my plans and witness God’s power unfold has been both challenging and beautiful.

Please share more about the spiritual climate, outreach strategy or ministry overview during your time serving this summer:

As I mentioned, I recently served as a staff member for the 7-week Greenhouse summer discipleship program. This time, the theme really resonated with me:

“Seek God’s face, seen with love, sent to bless.”

We focused on transformation over information helping each other understand how God sees us, how He created us, and how both blessings and brokenness shape our lives. This deep reflection helped many of us realize our true purpose in God.

Personally, preparing for retreats, teaching, and leading training was a precious and humbling experience. I prayed and reflected a lot on how to faithfully deliver God’s message in ways that lead to heart transformation, not just well-run programs. That became our core strategy—focusing on people over performance.

How would you encourage someone looking to get involved or engaged missionally? Any specific resources, tools, or communities to connect with?

You are sent to bless!

There are so many opportunities right here in downtown Toronto to be a disciple and make disciples. God has already blessed you and now is the time to let that blessing overflow into the world around you.

Every Wednesday, we host Bridges—an international student social gathering that’s open for you to come, connect, and be part of this mission. We also host special events, especially around the new semester, so check out our Instagram (@bridgesuoft) for updates!

If you’re interested in serving international students or if you are an international student, I’d love to connect with you personally. Let’s find ways to join God’s mission in this city together!

I love finding nice cafes and enjoying a good cup of coffee so if you ever want to connect (especially if you’re interested in international student ministry or you are an international student!), let’s meet up. I’d be happy to chat, listen, and walk alongside you on this journey.

Stories to Tell: Tina

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, my name is Tina.

How has God encouraged you this summer as you pursue His mission?

I've had several opportunities this summer to share Jesus with nonbelieving peers who I did not expect to be receptive to the Gospel. Having spiritual conversations, and sharing my testimony with these people have actually deepened our relationship, and I'm excited to keep walking with them. It's a huge encouragement, since I grew up thinking that persecution and rejection are the only experiences I'll ever experience being a Christian. Now that I've seen that many people are actually accepting of Jesus, it's made me realize that while witnessing can definitely result in persecution and rejection, it can also be very pleasant and rewarding when the message is received!

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

I don't know how else to live. God created me for mission. It is in my DNA. If I don't do it, I'll likely rot from the inside out. When I do live on mission, life is fun, fulfilling, challenging, and adventurous.

Stories to Tell: Simon

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hello! My name is Simon, and I'm excited to share about how I've seen God working this summer! I came to Toronto for university 3 years ago, and have experienced God in so many awesome ways here through my campus ministry, Power to Change, and through my church, Zoe Toronto. This summer I was working a full time internship as well as participating in a summer discipleship program called Greenhouse.

What is a favourite memory from your summer so far?

My favourite memories from this summer were living with the Filicicchia family. I've known Mikey and Jessie for a while through my church, and by God's plan they happen to be renting out their spare room during the exact months that I needed a place to live. After being away from my family for a few years, it was sooo delightful to live with a family again. I had tons of fun playing with their kids Ransom and Glory (many magic shows were watched, many stories were read 😆). I also loved bonding with Mikey and Jessie when we had the chance to eat dinner together, talk about life, and watch cool documentaries/movies. It was also such a joy to be around as they welcomed their newborn daughter Immanuelle!

How has God encouraged you this summer as you pursue His mission?

I was really encouraged by the faith of an international student named Kian. I remember sitting next to him at a Chinese New Year dinner hangout, and he started telling me about how he had recently started reading the bible and watching Christian online videos, and he was really interested in it. I invited him to my church, and as we kept talking, I realized he didn't yet have a clear understanding of the gospel. So I offered to walk him through the gospel in more detail, and as me and my bro Mikey explained what the bible says about God, sin, Jesus, and salvation, Kian wanted to give his life to Jesus.  He still had some reservations about surrendering EVERY aspect of his life to Jesus, but over the next few months God kept giving him more and more confidence and faith. It wasn't long before he reached the point where he wanted to be all in for Jesus, and made the decision to get baptized! I had the privilege of baptizing him, and continue to have the joy of being his bro and walking alongside him in his journey with Jesus!

How have you seen God working this summer in your life / community / this world?

One really awesome way I've seen God working this summer is in my friend Anson's life. He was first introduced to my church by a friend in the spring, and although not a Christian himself, he was interested and willing to join Greenhouse (a summer discipleship program). It was such a delight to be in a discipleship group with him and hear his life story! I was so amazed by his willingness to pray earnestly that God would reveal Himself to him. I am excited to continue walking with Anson, and I am confident that he will experience all of God's security, peace, and deep joy because everyone who seeks the Lord will find him!

Stories to Tell: Annie

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Hello! My name is Annie and I am an incoming 4th year student studying human resrouces and human geography! My favourite thing about summer in Toronto is walking outside without freezing and seeing the same streets I’d walk on during the school year filled with flowers and leafy trees, people and animals enjoying the summer.

What has been challenging or frustrating in your missional journey recently? How did you find hope in the midst of it?

The summer has been a challenging time with many distractions that I felt was hindering my ability to be fully present and put my full effort in planning for my fellowship the next school year. I was working long hours and wasn’t able to get good sleep at night to recharge. At times, I felt like I wasn’t able to keep up with everything else that is going on in my life -- friendships, church, fellowship, family, hobbies, etc.

Prayer was the most important thing that gave me hope in the midst of everything. Prayer from others especially was a source of hope and encouragement. Now that summer is drawing to an end, I can see how God has listened to my prayers and used this time to help me learn to depend on Him in my frustration. I am reminded of Philipians 4:6, which says “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

What are you hopeful for moving forward?

I am most excited to partner with God in what He is doing on campus going forward! This summer has been a lot of planning for the upcoming school year, so I am hopeful to reach more people and for opportunities to share the gospel and learn more about being missional together.

Stories to Tell: Emmanuel

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hello all! I'm a Year 2 student at the U of T, studying a Bachelor of Music Performance in Pipe Organ. I love being outdoors in Nature and learning about different cultures. I'm also an International Student, my home country is Singapore!

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

My parents always felt that my true calling lies in the area of Church Music. Having turned down a place in Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore, I came here to study, because my Pipe Organ teacher's friend directs the Sacred Music Program at Emmanuel College, and my mum had a dream about my Grandmother, who had studied at the U of T.

Even still, I find myself questioning, why am I studying overseas? University in Singapore does not sound as exciting, but certainly it is a safer option with career prospects? Get a proper job, save up money for a future Mission Trip. Certainly that is one way to "live missionally"?

While I am always attracted by the idea of rural subsistence farming, God has given me the privilege to come to Toronto, where I can connect not only with other International Students, but also distant relatives of my Grandma, incredible opportunities for outreach.

Which recent experiences have helped or hindered the ways you engage in missions?

While with the P2C Mission Trip "Nations Next Door" in Ottawa, inviting new friends to festivals, museums, churches etc., I experienced first-hand how art can bring people together, and when presented appropriately, speak volumes for the gospel. A favourite memory is: a Christian friend explaining Bible snippets featured in stained glass windows, at the Ottawa Notre Dame Cathedral where I had invited International Students to come hear me play the Pipe Organ. I can't wait to see more of that at the Faculty of Music Christian Fellowship.

While on the family's Mission Trip in Fiji, I see how Missions can take a toll on mental health, especially when the team does too much ministry, leaving insufficient time left for conflict resolution within the team. Even in a family where we know each other well, we need to care for each other by making space to hear each other out. When we embody Christ's love towards our family members, the people we minister to also receive encouragement.

What has been challenging or frustrating in your missional journey recently? How did you find hope in the midst of it?

Amidst the usual Cross-Cultural difficulties, a major challenge for me was returning to a family environment. I found it difficult adapting to making decisions in a group, considering the needs of my family above my own.

For example, while (at time of writing) currently on my last week here in the Fiji Mission trip, my family wants to take this opportunity to move to a more remote part of Fiji to rest.

However, I was frustrated with this. To me, I felt I could be just as well-rested staying put here, spending more time connecting with friends here. Furthermore, it seemed to me that we were retreating back into our comfort zone (of our nuclear family), not being willing to sacrifice our time, connecting with the people where we are at currently.

As always, I realize that this is another lesson in honouring my parents over my own desires, considering the needs of others in my family, who have been in Fiji a month longer than me, who need time to rest before returning to Singapore (to start school).

I remain hopeful that God has a special plan for us, and while we are weak, God makes us strong.

What are you hopeful for moving forward?

I'm looking forward to reconnecting with my family and friends in Singapore, it has been close to a year away from home, and I only have less than a month with them.

Coming back to Toronto in September, I am also very excited to plunge back into the various Campus Ministries, like the Mandarin Chinese Christian Fellowship, Power 2 Change etc.

I also hope to make more visits to the different churches (to play their Pipe Organs!) exploring the history and worship traditions of the churches in Canada, discerning what God is calling me towards.

Stories to Tell: Danielle

Tell Us A Bit About Yourself

Hey, my name is Danielle. I'm completing my final year at UofT in my studies in English, History, and Education this coming term. I'm a professional yapper, a flavourful foodie, and a strong lover of broken things God wants to redeem. Last term I was the Co-President of a fellowship called Power to Change, and was a Program Don with University College. I have a big passion and vision of serving students, equipping them with opportunities to encounter the person of Christ and to live faithfully in the love God has for them in serving others.

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

In following Jesus this summer, I encountered so many "no's" of opportunities and pursuits I thought were in my path for the future (i.e. applying to Teacher's College after 3 years of pursuing a teaching profession, and the end of valued relationships). In the season of closed doors God showed me his deep love in transforming my desires to be aligned to his will and reliant on his strength. In particular, God swung open a door for me to be faithful in choosing to obey him in going to Edmonton, Alberta for a mission trip with P2C. God said yes to fully providing for my 10k support raising goal, he said yes in healing me allowing me to be vulnerable with the community I encountered there, and he said yes in showing me where he wants my ministry to be in the future. God laid out my path so clearly to encounter rest in trusting his good plan for me.

What has been challenging or frustrating in your missions journey recently? How did you find hope in the midst of it?

My mission trip gave me so many valuable opportunities to serve the vulnerable as well as to wonder "who are those we deem as vulnerable?" I was challenged especially with the reality of how in a broken world, we are all vulnerable. When I relied on my own strength, seeing hope amidst brokenness was hard, but God showed me how he is in control of all things. As Col 1:12-23 showed me, God is able to "hold all things together" and "reconcile to himself all things to establish peace through his cross." Growing in prayer and faith to develop the eyes and mind of Christ, I have been able to have a restored sense of hope in how God is working. As I live in the now, but not yet, I am anticipating how life with God will direct how I live missionally, taking steps of faith in obedience to show others God's love and the hope of the gospel.

Stories to Tell: Ryand

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi everyone! My name is Ryand and I am currently one of the Key Student Leaders (Co-President) for Power to Change at UofT! A few things about me is that I was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada in 2011! I will be in my 4th year this coming school year studying in a double major on Health & Disease and Cell & Molecular Biology. First and foremost I strive to include God and my relationship with Him in all the things that I do, that through it, people will get to see Christ in me. I am also a family oriented person so if you follow me on my social media, you'll get to see a little bit of my family and the things we do, from going to picnics and joyrides! I love to sing and I’m grateful to use this gift to be a part of a choir and in the worship team, praising God! I am also a person that enjoys sports, specifically powerlifting! This coming fall I’ll be competing in my first competition, so I’m very blessed and excited to do something that I really enjoy on a competitive level and especially still keeping my faith in the centre while training for it.

How has following Jesus impacted your goals and plans this summer?

Following Jesus more intentionally and fervently has been a blessing and has allowed me to approach certain trials based on what the Bible says. Having taken seriously my study in God’s Word it made me become more dependent and seeking Him earnestly and what His will is in regards to my goals and plans for this summer, especially preparing for my 4th year at UofT. During this summer, Power to Change has been engaging in a Summer Discipleship Group Bible study whose main theme is “Everyday Faithfulness”, I have been blessed and fortunate to have other leaders involved that have a heart for God and have the desire to exalt Him and find ways to seek Him during this summer season where there is a tendency to relax and sometimes not leave time to be in God’s presence. I thank God that through the Holy Spirit, He has equipped me and other leaders to be trusted and lead discussions in our Bible study that allows us to be more intentional with our time with Him.

How has God encouraged you this summer as you pursue His mission?

God has encouraged me this summer through engaging in Scripture and reading books that can help nurture my growth as a Christian. A verse in Scripture that has encouraged me as I desire to pursue His mission and make Christ known to people is found in Acts 17:32. This part in the Bible depicts the journey of Paul in Athens as he addresses the people by sharing the Gospel through teaching about Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection. Verse 32 shows that as Paul was sharing the resurrection, some mocked him but others were willing to hear him again on the topic of Christ. This changed my approach in His mission and that, we truly never know who is in need of hearing the good news of Jesus, we may get mocked by our belief, but if our sharing leads to someone showing curiosity and seeking Him, leading to that individual to accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour, gives me encouragement to pursue and continue the mission He entrusted His disciples and in extent, to us in Matthew 28:19-20.

What is a favourite memory from your summer so far?

It has yet to happen, but in August, my family and I will be going to Texas to visit my Uncle which also includes celebrating my birthday! So very excited for that! Other than that, I think my favourite memory is to really just spend my time with God (whether if it is through my independent Bible reading, Summer DG, Church, Choir, etc), being in awe of who He is in my life, acknowledging Him for who He is. Causes me to abide closer to Him than before and live my life out for Him.

What are you hopeful for moving forward?

Being involved in Power to Change as a Key Student Leader, I am very hopeful and excited on how God will use me and my other fellow leaders in moving the ministry forward at UofT and engage with the students in our campus and have the light of Christ be known. That through this, I am also able to grow more in my personal life and relationship with God, growing deeper in Him as time goes by, as well as developing stronger relationships with my friends! A verse of encouragement that I would like to encourage you all is found in Colossians 3:2, as we set our minds on things above, our approach in matters changes and shifts and would align with what God’s will is. To know God, is to love His ways, but not only love but also to walk in those ways as well. Our vision for this coming school year is found in 1 John 2:5-6, I am hopeful and excited to see how God will use this passage, to impact not just our ministry but to the community that we are engaging with!

Stories to Tell: Gwen

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hello everyone! My name is Gwen. I’m a Bostonian living in Toronto and entering my fourth year at U of T studying math and statistics. I first got connected with Missions Hub a few years ago through a Missions Disciplers group, and since then, you may have seen me around at events like Luke 10:2. This is my first summer living in Toronto, and I have really been enjoying the warm weather and late sunsets after the long winter season. In my downtime, I’ve been reading books, jamming on the guitar, biking to parks around the GTA, playing pickup soccer, or just basking in the sunlight on campus.

Why is engaging in missions important to you?

A few years after becoming a Christian, my faith was changed by the realization that every event since Genesis has been purposefully leading up to the final gathering of his children from every tribe, people, and language. I’m always inspired by stories of Christians who have oriented their lives around ministry to unreached people groups in light of this image from Revelation. I hope that as I experience God’s goodness in my life, it could similarly overflow into a joyful desire for others to find the same blessing in Christ—especially those who have no access to the gospel. Engaging in this global mission is an amazing opportunity to witness God’s pursuit of his people way beyond the bubble of my own life.

What has been challenging or frustrating in your missional journey recently? How did you find hope in the midst of it?

A few years ago, I found myself increasing in apathy towards God, and it was disheartening to feel my distance to him growing just as in a season of doubt I had experienced years before that. However, one thing I can attest to looking back on my journey is that as often as I have felt ready to give up on fellowship with God, he has still pursued me in his good timing, bringing about internal change that I couldn’t have orchestrated myself. These experiences have shown me that even my ability to grow in faith is a result of his generous grace. In my apathy, I eventually began to notice the way God was slowly opening my heart, and I was reminded of the way that he had led me through discouragement in the past and retained the same sovereignty to do so again.

How are you seeking to live missionally in this season of your life?

During his ministry, Jesus told his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few” (Matt. 9:37). I want to live missionally in the current season by praying for openness to any way God would want me to participate in his global kingdom. I also hope to engage by mobilizing (i.e., sharing about God’s heart for the nations) my Christian friends—and also myself since I know there’s a lot out there for me to learn!

What are you hopeful for moving forward?

As I’m nearing the end of my undergrad, I spend a lot of time wondering what life will look like on the other side. It’s easy to minimize the time I have left in Toronto while fixated on the unknowns ahead, but I realize that God has greatly blessed me with the classmates, campus fellowship, and church community that I have right now. The past few months have been marked with some of the most excitement I’ve ever felt both to be learning more and to be sharing with others about the worthiness of God. So going into the new school year, I’m hopeful for more opportunities to learn from older Christians, encourage younger Christians, and share with non-Christian friends about how this faith has changed my life.
